Choi Jin Soon has found a way to get ahead on the job: more hair. In December, the salesman at a food company spent 4 million won ($2,930), a little more than his monthly pay, to graft 3,560 hair follicles on his frontal scalp.

For four hours, Choi laid awake under local anesthesia as plastic surgeon Kang Jang Seok dug strands from the back of his head and implanted them on the balding areas. He says he expects to feel younger and more confident meeting clients when the follicles start growing in six months.

Once panned as frivolous or effeminate, plastic surgery is gaining popularity among South Korean men seeking better social and job prospects. Men now account for 15 percent of Korea’s nip-and-tuck procedures, compared with 10 percent in 2006, according to Hong Jeong Geun, spokesman at the Korean Association of Clinical Plastic Surgeons.

In the U.S., the world’s largest cosmetic surgery market, men account for about 9 percent of all such operations, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, or ASPS.

“For many women, this is a luxury; for men, it’s more about survival than vanity,” said Hong.

South Korea’s cosmetic surgery market is worth about 600 billion won annually, according to Seoul-based market researcher Read & Leader Corp., citing the National Tax Service. That just takes into account the authorized operators. Include unlicensed and non-taxed procedures, and the figure is closer to 3 trillion won, according to the researcher.

Global Market

Based on ASPS figures last year, the Korean market is one- fifth the size of the U.S.’s. The global market for cosmetic industry is more than $30 billion a year, Frost and Sullivan said in a research note in December, citing the ASPS.

Even as the jobless rate in Asia’s fourth-biggest economy rose to the highest since August 2006, male patient numbers are dropping at a slower pace. That suggests nip-and-tuck surgeries for men, who have still more purchasing power than women, may rebound more strongly than the industry average when the economy recovers, Hong said.

“Men have just started entering the market. They have a lot of growth potential,” said Hong.

Appearance is one of the most important aspects in getting, and keeping, a job in a nation where men are the main breadwinners in 80 percent of households, said Kang, Choi’s surgeon, who has performed more than 3,000 surgeries on men in the past four years. His practice is in the wealthy district of Apgujeong, with the highest concentration of plastic-surgery clinics in Seoul.

Male cosmetic surgery industry

For the first time in several years, male cosmetic surgery has declined 2% during 2008. The American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery (AACS), a leader in the cosmetic surgery industry, conducted its annual Procedural Survey and the survey reveals that males are cutting back on cosmetic procedures.

During 2008, cosmetic surgeons have seen a 2% decrease in male clientele, while 29% more females have visited a cosmetic surgeon. Males have moved away from cosmetic procedures whereas females have continued to take advantage of the effective, less-invasive procedures due to the lower cost and the quicker recovery time. Procedures such as Botox injections and laser resurfacing have continued to remain steady for these reasons.

"For the time being, males and females are beginning to separate themselves in regards to cosmetic surgery," states AACS President Patrick McMenamin, M.D. "It used to be that the yearly percentage gain in males was matching that of the women but now women are choosing to invest in themselves while men have reduced the desire to have cosmetic surgery. The economy of course plays a role in the scaling back of cosmetic procedures but the advancement and effectiveness of less-invasive procedures has also boosted the industry for women."

Other notable findings from the survey include:

* Over the past three years, cosmetic surgeons have seen a significant increase in both males (456%) and females (215%) electing to have laser resurfacing. Although the economy is struggling, these laser procedures are looking to be recession resistant. For instance, laser resurfacing has seen an approximate $450 decline in price since 2002.
* The top three most performed cosmetic surgical procedures in 2008 include: liposuction, blepharoplasty and breast augmentation; while the most popular non-invasive cosmetic procedures were Botox(R) injections, laser hair removal and injectable fillers.

Reporting from Shanghai -- In this crummy job market, Stephanie Yang figures any little advantage will help. Even double eyelids.

So on a cold January morning, the 21-year-old college senior walked into one of dozens of plastic surgery clinics here and plopped down $730, the equivalent of one year's tuition. An hour later she came out with two big bandages over her eyes.

When she removed the dressing the next day, Yang was aghast at her red, puffy eyelids. But now she looks out with her round eyes, a sharp crease across the upper lids, ready for the next interview.

"They may not say it openly, but during the process they will pick the prettier one," she says.

Judging by the boom in plastic surgeries lately, a lot of young Chinese would agree.

In the U.S., the recession has led to a steep drop in cosmetic surgeries, which generally aren't paid for by health insurers. Nose jobs aren't covered in China either, but that's not stopping consumers here. Job hunters know that a pleasing face helps to get a foot in the door.

"I've been surprised how busy it is," says Dr. Liao Yuhua, president of Shanghai Time Plastic Surgery Hospital, one of the largest in the city. Business began to increase last November, she says, and in recent weeks has been running 40% higher than a year ago. At its busiest in January, Liao says, her team of 10 surgeons was doing as many as 100 procedures a day, raising noses, cutting eyelids and chiseling angular faces into the shape of smooth goose eggs.

Just about the only thing Shanghai Time doesn't do are leg-lengthening surgeries, an expensive and painful procedure that illustrates just how far some Chinese are willing to go to boost their employment prospects.

Record numbers of patients are undergoing laser skin treatments as the technology behind such methods rapidly advances.

A survey by the American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery (AACS) found that cosmetic laser treatments are becoming increasingly popular as consumers seek to reverse the visible signs of ageing on their skin.

Whereas cosmetic surgery patients have traditionally had to endure going under the knife in order to enhance their appearance, non-invasive procedures are now coming to the fore.

Dr Patrick McMenamin, president of the AACS, commented: "Cosmetic surgery technology is advancing at the speed of light.

"As we learn more about the cosmetic uses for lasers, the more patients benefit from effective results and quicker recovery time. It is an exciting time for both cosmetic surgery patients and physicians."

Dr McMenamin added that, despite the state of the economy, he does not expect demand for laser procedures to drop as long as they remain "effective and affordable".

Boob job bandit surrenders

A California woman accused of using a fake identity to obtain breast implants from a plastic surgeon, earning the nickname "The Boob-Job Bandit" in local media, has turned herself in to police.

Yvonne Jean Pampellonne, 30, surrendered on Tuesday afternoon to authorities in Huntington Beach, California, where she was wanted on charges of commercial burglary, grand theft and identity theft.

The Orange County Register newspaper reported that Pampellonne -- who had attracted sensational coverage as the so-called "Boob-Job Bandit" in the local media -- was caught by police detectives using breast implant tracking numbers.

She arranged her surrender through an attorney and has since been released on $20,000 bail with orders to face an arraignment on the charges on May 27.

Police say that in September of 2008 Pampellonne used the personal information of another woman to establish a line of credit at the Pacific Center for Plastic Surgery in Huntington Beach.

Doctors performed $12,000 in liposuction and breast augmentation surgery at the center, police say, unwittingly charging $12,000 to the phony line of credit and exchanging her existing implants for new ones.

Medical staff at the center became suspicious after Pampellonne returned for follow-up appointments and, after police identified her through the tracking numbers on the old implants, picked her out of a photo line-up.

Doctor dozed during surgery

When Dr. Loren J. Borud began his first case at about 8 a.m., an operating room nurse noticed he looked tired and wobbly. She was so concerned, according to one account of the Friday last June, that she suggested Borud postpone his next patient.

Borud said he had been up all night working on a book, but he kept operating, starting a second case, during which he briefly fell asleep, according to a report from state investigators. The nurse again called him aside and suggested "maybe he should take a break," according to her interviews with investigators, but he continued the surgery.

These findings are part of a report in which state Department of Public Health investigators found that Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center provided poor care to Borud's second patient that day. They also faulted the hospital's response to Bo rud's apparent impairment.

The patient, Michael K. Hicks of Quincy, has said he suffered complications after liposuction surgery and repair of a scar on his chest, and in July he sued the hospital, six doctors including Borud, and two nurses. He has settled his case; the terms are confidential.

Huntington Beach Police are searching for a Laguna Niguel woman who allegedly stole someone's identity to pay for $15,000 worth of cosmetic surgery.

A $20,000 arrest warrant has been issued for Yvonne Jean Pampellonne, 30, who was identified through a photo line-up as the woman who allegedly had liposuction and a breast implant at the Pacific Center for Plastic Surgery in Huntington Beach, said Huntington Beach police Detective Larry Pitcher.

Pampellonne went in for the procedures in September but never returned for follow-up appointments, Pitcher said.

Pampellonne is wanted on commercial burglary, grand theft and identity theft charges Pitcher said.

Super micro surgery gives hope to breast cancer patients

Breast cancer patients with lymphedema in their upper arm experienced reduced fluid in the swollen arm by up to 39 percent after undergoing a super-microsurgical technique known as lymphaticovenular bypass, report researchers at The University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center.

The results from the prospective analysis, presented March 23 at the 88th Annual Meeting of the American Association of Plastic Surgeons, suggest another option for breast cancer patients considering ways to manage lymphedema, a common and debilitating condition following surgery and/or radiation therapy for breast cancer.

Lymphedema results when the lymph nodes are removed or blocked due to treatment and lymph fluid accumulates causing chronic swelling in the upper arm. Currently, there is no cure or preventive measure for lymphedema and it is difficult to manage; the use of compression bandages, massage and other forms of lymphatic therapy are commonly recommended options for patients. According to the National Cancer Institute, 25 to 30 percent of women who have breast cancer surgery with lymph node removal and radiation therapy develop lymphedema.

Researchers evaluated 20 breast cancer patients with stage II and III treatment-related lymphedema of the upper arm who underwent a lymphaticovenular bypass at M. D. Anderson from December 2005 to September 2008. Due to lymphedema, the patients' affected arm was an average of 34 percent larger compared to the unaffected arm prior to the surgery. Of these 20 patients, 19 reported initial significant clinical improvement following the procedure. In those patients with postoperative volumetric analysis measurements, total mean reduction in the volume differential at one month was 29 percent, at three months 33 percent, at six months 39 percent and 25 percent at one year.

"Patients often resort to lymphatic therapy because other options brought forward to reduce lymphedema haven't proved effective," said lead author on the study David W. Chang, M.D., professor in the Department of Plastic Surgery and Director of the Plastic Surgery Clinic at M. D. Anderson. "Surgical techniques, in particular, have been limited and therefore have been met with skepticism by surgeons, making it extremely important to determine which new techniques promise to bring real benefits to patients."

In lymphaticovenular bypass surgery, surgeons use tiny microsurgical tools to make two to three small incisions measuring an inch or less in the patient's arm. Lymphatic fluid is then redirected to microscopic vessels - approximately 0.3 - 0.8 millimeters in diameter - to promote drainage and alleviate lymphedema. The procedure is minimally invasive and is generally completed in less than four hours under general anesthesia, allowing patients to return home from the hospital within 24 hours. M. D. Anderson is among a few institutions in the United States to offer this technically complex surgery.

"Lymphedema is like a massive traffic jam with no exit," Chang said. "This procedure does a lot to help relieve lymphedema by giving the fluid a way out. While it does not totally eliminate the condition, there is very little downside for the patient and we may see significant improvement in its severity."

Chang notes that while most effective when completed in earlier stages before the affected arm is fibrotic, almost any breast cancer patient suffering from lymphedema stage I, II or III is a candidate. Though breast cancer was the focus of this study, the surgery can also be performed on patients who have lymphedema in the leg resulting from cancers involving pelvic regions.

Cancer treatment is not the only cause of lymphedema. Primary lymphedema can develop from developmental causes at birth, the onset of puberty or in adulthood. Secondary lymphedema can develop as a result of surgery, radiation, infection or trauma. In developing countries, a form of lymphedema caused by a parasite called Filariasis affects as many as 200 million people worldwide. "As we begin to refine our technique and learn more about the efficacy of this surgery, we have the potential to impact a large number of people," Chang said.

Long-term follow-up with patients who have received lymphaticovenular bypass surgery is necessary to determine if the procedure continues to promote drainage after one year. Chang and his team of surgeons at M. D. Anderson believe that the fluid volume will keep decreasing over time and suggest that the surgery could possibly be used as a preventive measure for lymphedema in the future. "Working toward a definitive technique to cure this encumbering side effect of cancer and improve a patient's quality of life as a cancer survivor is a priority for those of us in this field."

British pop princess Kerry Katona had her breast implants removed on UK’s MTV last year, but hit headlines again last week when she placed one (autographed and all) on eBay apparently to raise funds for charity breastcancercampaign.org. While the 28-year-old’s intentions might have been honest, the 34GG fake filet caused too many legal issues for the world’s leading auction site.

"The implant was on eBay and I believe the idea was to raise money for Breast Cancer Campaign," a rep for the charity told Tarts. "However eBay have now taken the item off because people were putting fake bids in, £8 million ($11.34 million US) at one point."

But according to eBay it wasn’t bogus bidders that resulted in the item being removed, it was actually Katona who broke the rules.

"Our policy team weighed in and said that this auction was removed for the Charity Violation contained within the item description as there was no letter of written consent by eBay's Office of the President to allow the item to be sold under our Charity guidelines," an eBay rep told Tarts.

The famous female asset up-for-grabs was listed with the unsubstantiated and unauthorized caption "… any monies received by this auction will go to the charity Breast cancer campaign…" Katona initially announced the auction on her Facebook page and as it turns out she didn’t even inform the charity she planned to donate the funds toward. So was it all just a planned PR stunt by the "Atomic Kitten" and will she actually live up to her word and still use her plastic prop to raise money in another way?

"We have no idea what her plans are as it wasn't something we knew about until we saw the media coverage," the Breast Cancer Campaign rep added. "She isn't someone we have been in contact with before so this story just appeared out of the blue. She has also just announced that she's getting divorced so she's probably got other things to worry about."

A rep for Katona did not respond for comment.

Although Vanna looks amazing, there seems to be some controversy as to whether or not Vanna has ever had work done. The letter turning herself has never said anything one way or another as to whether or not she has had plastic surgery, although she has reportedly denied it on occasion.

A few years ago, there were unconfirmed rumors that Vanna had dabbled in Botox. However, some seem to feel she needs Botox, while others think she has never had any work. The difference in opinions, both professional and not, could stem from Vanna using Botox for a while, stopping the injections, and then changing her mind and going back to them, or another dermal injectable.

Manhattan plastic surgeon Dr. David Shafer, says, “Vanna White looks great for 52. She has obviously had Botox. Examining her photos over the years, she seems to have tried Botox intermittently. She seems to alternate between a perfectly smooth forehead to having moderate glabellar and forehead lines and fairly significant crow’s feet. In a few pictures it looks as if she has had cheek injections, since in her most recent photos her cheeks are more voluminous than older photos. There a few 2007 pictures, in particular, where she looks pretty worn out. However, in her most recent pictures, she looks beautiful, as always.”

On the other hand, Dr. Paul S. Nassif, a Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon and Rhinoplasty Specialist in Beverly Hills, Calif., says, “I know her and she hasn’t had any face work.”

Doctor fakes being a plastic surgeon

Could your doctor be passing himself off as a specialist when he's not actually board certified? The NewsChannel 36 I-Team found out it happens all the time.

When we went by Dr. Paul Drago's house Wednesday, we were greeted by a "no trespassing" sign. It was not there when we were at the Ballantyne Country Club house on Monday.

The North Carolina Medical Board just yanked Drago's license after nearly a dozen women filed board complaints against him, saying he caused pain, scarring and disfigurement.

He worked at Genesis Plastic Surgery and former patients say he called himself a plastic surgeon.

Dr. Felmont Eaves, a nationally recognized and board certified plastic surgeon, said, "The medical laws actually state that once you have a license it's not really restricted to certain areas, so really the patient has to check."

Drago wasn't actually certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery.

"In this economy we're seeing those that may not be fully trained and adequately trained are really attempting to move into this area," Eaves told us.

Eaves is concerned there are plenty more like Drago.

"Legally, if they have access to an operating room, legally someone who has a medical license can do anything that they attempt," Eaves said.

Surgery for Smokers

More than a third of patients who took part in an eight-week smoking cessation programme before and after planned surgery were able to give up and most of them were still smoke free after a year, according to new research.

They also experienced half as many complications after surgery as the patients who did not receive help to give up smoking, with 21 per cent experiencing problems as opposed to 41 per cent.

Researchers randomly assigned 117 patients who were due to undergo general or orthopaedic surgery to an intervention and control group.

“The intervention group attended weekly meetings or received telephone support and were provided with free nicotine replacement therapy, while the control group just received standard pre-operative care” says lead author Dr Omid Sadr Azodi from the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, Sweden.

“Patients were then assessed at regular intervals before and after surgery and after 12 months.

“One interesting thing to emerge from the study was the high refusal rate. A further 76 patients declined to take part in our research because they were unwilling to give up smoking or were stressed by their forthcoming surgery.”

Key findings from the study included:

Twenty of the patients in the intervention group (36 per cent) abstained from smoking for the minimum period of three weeks before their operation and four weeks after surgery, compared with one patient in the control group (two per cent). The figures peaked at 58 per cent one week before surgery.
People in the intervention group were more than twice as likely to be smoke free at 12 months than those in the control group. Eighteen of the intervention group (33 per cent) were still smoke free and nine members of the control group had given up (15 per cent).
Patients with a lower level of nicotine dependence – who scored less than four on the zero to ten Fagerstrom scale – were 3.4 times more likely to be smoke free at 12 months.
Those with a high body mass index - of more than 30 - were 3.3 times more likely to be smoke free after 12 months.
Being employed increased the long-term success rate to 2.3, but marital status, education and living with a smoker had no significant bearing on abstinence rates at 12 months.
The majority of the patients who took part completed the study - 87 per cent of the intervention group and 84 per cent of the control group.
Just over half of the 117 patients (53 per cent) were male and the average age was 56. Their average body mass index was just over 25. Median smoking levels were ten to 20 cigarettes a day and the median time since patients started smoking was just over 35 years. Just over a third (36 per cent) had a nicotine dependency score of less than four.

As well as the medical condition they were receiving surgery for, 15 per cent suffered from depression, 12 per cent from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, nine per cent from chronic heart disease and two per cent from diabetes.

“Smokers are prone to developing a number of complications after surgery, ranging from impaired wound and bone healing to life-threatening pulmonary and cardiovascular problems” says Dr Sadr Azodi. “This is why it is so important to find feasible, financially attractive and effective ways to help patients stop smoking before surgery.

“Our study shows that providing support in the run up to surgery enabled a third of the patients who took part in the study to remain smoke free after a year.

“Lower nicotine dependence levels were significantly associated with long-term abstinence and we believe that high levels should be classed as a chronic disorder. Our intervention was for a fairly intense eight-week period, but we recognize that people with higher levels of dependency may need longer to help them stop smoking before surgery.”

In general, those who opt for this relatively simple “ weekend” facelift are still in their 30s or 40s. Usually they want to remove minor sagging or drooping around the cheeks, jowls, and neck area. For those wishing to address more serious sagging, a lower facelift is probably a better option.

Standard Facelift vs. Mini Facelift

Traditional facelift surgery is appropriate for patients who would like to enhance their appearance by reducing wrinkles and sagging throughout their entire face. The mini facelift, by contrast, is intended for patients who wish to reduce sagging and droopiness only in specifically targeted areas. Depending on the situation, an endoscopic or a non-endoscopic approach may be used. An endoscopic procedure allows the doctor to insert surgical instruments through three or more small cuts made around the area to be treated. The cost of the mini facelift makes it a particularly attractive option. More Boomers getting plastic surgery

Plastic surgery has become more common among seniors, especially women ages 55 and up, says Ana Phelps, marketing director and cosmetic consultant at Dr. Deisher's Heartland Plastic and Hand Surgery in Cape Girardeau. In many cases, these patients have lost a spouse and are preparing to re-enter the dating scene.

"They still want to look good and feel good," says Phelps. Facial procedures like face and eye lifts are most popular among seniors, and tummy tucks come in at No. 2, she notes. Many seniors also benefit from reconstructive plastic surgery after a medical procedure.

After being diagnosed with breast cancer in 2003, Jackson resident Mary Kirn, age 69, underwent a mastectomy and reconstructive surgery. It was a lengthy process, she says. After the mastectomy, she had to wait a year for the reconstruction because she was still having chemotherapy treatments. Before the TRAM flap reconstruction, which transfers tissue from the abdomen to the breast, Kirn also had to use tissue expanders to make room for the implant in her breast. When it was finally time for the reconstruction, Kirn had surgery on her remaining breast, too, so that it would match her new breast. It took three or four weeks to recover from each surgery, but she says it was worth the wait.

"The reconstruction was wonderful," says Kirn, who has been cancer-free for six years. "You're not as good as you were, but the procedure is so good that even a nipple can be reconstructed ... It was a really positive experience for me." In fact, she says the results are so natural that no one can tell the difference between her looks now and before the experience, even when she's wearing low-cut gowns.

"Plastic surgery, especially of that type, makes you feel better about yourself," she adds.

In early January 2009, Kirn had a second plastic surgery, this time on her eyes. The eyelid lift surgery, called blepharoplasty, was meant to correct her "droopy lids and poor peripheral vision," she explains. While she was at it, she decided to have surgery on her lower lids, as well, to improve the entire area. She had some swelling and bruising, but says the surgery overall was not a problem and she was back to work in no time.

"I was totally open to plastic surgery for myself," says Kirn. "It's the thing to do if it will make you feel better about yourself. If you've had breast cancer, it's a must. For anything else, if it bothers you, then go for it!" She would consider having more cosmetic surgeries, but for now, she says, "only time will tell."

Lynn McLain, age 60, began experimenting about 10 years ago with Thermage and other anti-aging facial treatments. The Cape Girardeau woman has always struggled with sinus infections, and numerous surgeries had left her face looking older than she felt. She had also inherited her family's tendency toward labial fold lines, marionette lines, and jowls.

"I felt like I looked crabby, tired and irritated," says McLain. She considered plastic surgery, but quickly brushed it off: It was too expensive, too invasive, too scary. But after her last sinus surgery left her upper lip looking noticeably "lax," she began to reconsider.

"I realized, this is how I'm going to look as I age," says McLain. She spent two years researching facelifts before meeting with a Cape Girardeau surgeon and setting a surgery date for January 2008. Together, they discussed the procedure, her expectations, and things she could do to prepare, such as stocking up on soft foods to eat and bags of frozen peas to ease the swelling.

"I didn't expect to look 45, I just wanted to look upbeat and pleasant," says McLain. She adds that her plans to work for several more years intensified her desire to look fit and alert.

McLain's facelift extended from the bottom of her eyelashes to the bottom of her face. Doctors cut the skin, muscles and nerves around her ears and jawline, pulled back and tightened the skin, cut off the excess, and stitched the face back together. The surgery took only a couple of hours, and McLain was back home that evening and trying to cook dinner.

She didn't feel much pain after the surgery; her face just felt "weird" and there was some bruising and swelling. For a few weeks, her face was so numb and stiff that she couldn't chew the chicken in her soup or feel whether or not she was smiling. McLain stayed home for two straight weeks after the surgery, was working half days by week three, and was working full-time again by week four.

She and her family were struck by how the surgery changed her face. When you're used to seeing your face a certain way, says McLain, you forget about the features you used to have — like well-defined cheekbones.

"It may have been 10 or 15 years since I saw that bone structure," she says. "It was a delight to look in the mirror. It was a surprise, almost."

The face continues to heal for about a year after surgery, and the lift should last up to 10 years, depending on a person's natural physique and how she cares for herself. McLain says she would definitely consider having another facelift.

"Overall the experience was a good one," she says. "There was never a moment where I felt physically, unbearably uncomfortable." She did have an initial, panicked reaction to the bruises and the tightness of her skin, but is grateful for her husband, David, who stood by her the entire time and reminded her how much she would love her new face.

"It worked out beautifully and I'm very happy," says McLain.

Her only wish now is that she had started the process five years earlier. However, she recalls that when she was in her 30s and 40s, average people didn't have plastic surgery. Only celebrities had plastic surgery, she says, but today, "the scene has changed considerably." With that in mind, she advises others to begin doing research in their late 40s so that they'll be ready for a lift by their early 50s. It's also very important to make time for research, planning and recovery, and find a doctor you feel comfortable with and can ask any questions.

40-year-old supermodel Helena Christensen admits worrying about losing her looks, but insists she would never go under the knife because the prospect terrifies her.

She said: “It’s not like I’d say ‘never’ but there’s a big step between thinking, ‘If I was going to change something, what would it be?’ and going to a doctor and have him put you to sleep and start cutting.

“So even if I wanted to, I think my fear would be stronger than my vanity. I’m hoping they’ll find non-invasive ways to fix everything.”

Despite access to thousands of designer outfits, Helena insists she is happiest wearing men’s clothes.

Economy not cutting into plastic surgery market

As tightly as people are holding onto their cash and cutting back on unnecessary expenses these days, many are willing to upgrade their appearance, no matter the price.

Plastic surgeon Dr. Jose Rios and cosmetic dermatologist Dr. Matthew Kelleher say their practices continue to boom despite the economy.

"Plastic surgery is as popular as ever," Rios said. "We are seeing a slight shift to nonsurgical procedures, though, which don't have as large up-front costs. There are also more options to finance our procedures if a patient prefers credit."

During stressful times, people feel it's especially nice to feel good about themselves physically, said Rios, who is part of Rios and Lapinski Dermatology and Plastic Surgery Associates in Joliet and Frankfort.

"We're just about as busy as we ever were," said Kelleher, a cosmetic dermatologist at Advanced Cosmetic Laser and Surgery Center and Dermatology in Joliet. "I think this is true because the procedures we do are smaller, more affordable and less invasive. Our patients are able to bounce back quickly and are back to work soon. Our procedures are simple, in-out procedures done in the office."

Both doctors were asked to give their top five procedures performed at their offices.

Dr. Jose Rios

1. Breast augmentation. This is Rios' specialty and is the surgery most of his patients request of him. He said the procedure he uses is unlike most others and doesn't produce as much bruising. Pain pills aren't even necessary, he said, and there are no drains or special wrappings or bindings.

Most patients who want larger breasts start out with an A cup or B cup and want a "full C cup." His clients are usually either in the 18- to 25-year-old range and have small breasts or they are older than 30 and have had children and want to regain some fullness. He doesn't perform augmentations to create extremely large breasts, he said.

2. Tummy tucks. Most of his clients who get tummy tucks are women who have had children and who have some loose skin in their lower abdominal area. Others have had an emergency Cesarean section or other surgeries and don't like the scar.

"We can eliminate that scar completely," Rios said, "by removing the vertical scar and making a horizontal scar lower down at the bikini line."

3. Liposuction. Most common are the tummy, hips and the lower back area just above the hips.

4. Breast reductions. This is one plastic surgery that is often covered by insurance, Rios said. He's performed the procedure on women of all ages, from 17-year-olds to 65-year-olds.

"These women are suffering when they come in," he said. "It can cause neck and shoulder pain and upper back pain."

Surgery to reduce the size of the breasts can cause significant scarring, Rios said, but it is also a plastic surgery that has a very high customer satisfaction rate.

5. Breast lifts. Most of Rios' clients who request this surgery have had children and breast-fed them. Breast-feeding, he said, can alter the breasts in every way you can think of. It can make them smaller, larger, droop, or they can stay the same. It's the women who say their breasts are "droopy" who request breast lifts. The nipples can be pointing down, he said, and they come in saying they want their breasts back where they used to be.

Dr. Matthew Kelleher

1. Laser facial rejuvenation . Kelleher's offices have more than 20 different types of lasers. He might use one or more lasers on one patient to correct a condition. These procedures are used to treat facial redness, spider veins, sun spots, large oil glands, enlarged pores, wrinkles and other skin problems.

2. Liposculpture . This is different from liposuction, Kelleher said, in that it is done under local anesthesia in the office, rather than in a surgical room at the hospital. It has lower risks, he said, and is significantly safer with smaller incisions and no sutures.

3. Fraxel . This is the brand name of a specialized laser that Kelleher said is unique. It is safer and more effective than other lasers, he said, because it fractionates the laser beam into thousands of microscopic lasers. It's a very exciting advancement in laser therapy, he said, in that it burrows millions of microscopic tunnels in the skin that stimulate new collagen growth. He uses it to treat aging, sun damage, and scars.

4. Botox . Kelleher uses Botox on patients of all ages to prevent wrinkles by relaxing the muscles. If tiny lines are treated with Botox injections very early, he said, the procedure is 100 percent effective in correcting the wrinkles.

5. Injectable fillers . A range of materials is used to fill in deeper wrinkles, and the procedure is reversible if necessary. Filler injections last between six and 12 months.

Schoolgirl needs plastic surgery after attack

A BRAVE teenager has told how she has rebuilt her life almost a year after a yob smashed her face with a brick.

Kayla-Lee Purdie was just 15-years-old when George Ewing broke her jaw and cheek bone and left her scarred for life.

She was left with a metal plate in her face and missed months of school, including a crucial exam, as she recovered from the horrific attack.

The youngster, now 16, had been woken by drunken Ewing, 22, and a gang of his friends wreaking havoc outside her home in Quarrybank, Edinburgh, last May.

After going to investigate, she found a full-scale riot in which both her parents were assaulted.

Mum Melanie, a revenue and benefits officer, and dad Gary, a bar supervisor, said they had confronted a gang of around eight youths who began banging their window and car around 5.30am.

"I was just standing watching, I didn't know what to do and I was afraid," said Kayla-Lee.

"I just saw a flash of yellow and green coming in from the side and at first I thought I had been punched.

"I didn't think I had been knocked out but now I can't really remember much until I was taken back into my home. My cheek was covered in blood and I was shaking and very cold."

Kayla-Lee was left with a 2cm scar and needed a metal plate attached to her jaw by plastic surgeons at St John's Hospital in Livingston.

Following the attack, which also left Gary, 40, needing seven staples to the back of his head,

Kayla-Lee also missed her crucial mathematics standard grade exam and has lost a year trying to make-up the time at school.

She had to sit the rest of her fourth-year tests in agony and feeling self-conscious about her appearance.

Mum Melanie, 36, said: "There were so many times when I would walk into the room and she would just be looking into the mirror and crying."

Almost a year after the attack, Kayla-Lee says she is now rediscovering her confidence after months of heartache over her appearance.

Her scar has faded and surgeons are hopeful she will make a good recovery, although the mark will never completely disappear.

She was forced to eat through a straw for around three weeks and her face was swollen for months as well as missing around eight-weeks of school. She said:

"I was afraid to go out in case I bumped into Ewing and my self-confidence was pretty low.

"I stopped going out with my friends and was afraid to be in the house alone."

Now Kayla-Lee is looking forward to a normal fifth year as she sits her higher exams.

At Edinburgh Sheriff Court yesterday, Ewing admitted assaulting Kayla-Lee to her severe injury and permanent disfigurement.

He claimed he threw the brick at another person but missed and hit Kayla-Lee.

Sheriff Fiona Reith deferred sentence on Ewing, of West Pilton Street, Edinburgh, until next month.

He was granted bail.

Mission of Mercy

A Visalia plastic surgeon will be joining a Southern California medical group on a mission to give impoverished children in Mexico a reason to smile.

Dr. Alex Lechtman, who practices at Visalia Medical Clinic's Aesthetic Center, will leave Thursday morning with a team of plastic surgeons with Interface — a volunteer group affiliated with the University of California, San Diego's School of Medicine — to La Piedad, Michoacan, to perform cleft lip and palate repairs, bone grafts and other procedures for nearly 100 people.

Makeshift hospital

Lechtman said operations will begin Friday morning and will continue Saturday inside a makeshift hospital set up by the Red Cross.

"We treat as many people as we can in two days," he said.

The hospital is set up in a building that allows for three operating rooms and six beds. Doctors will bring their own surgical instruments and medical supplies, he said.

Although the focus of the trip is cleft lip and palate operations for children, he said, other people from surrounding towns and states make the trip to the hospital for other cosmetic procedures, such as improving the appearance of burn scars.

"When the word comes out that we're coming, they start to line up at the hospital steps and wait for hours," he said. "These are folks in Mexico who have no other resources for care. This gives us an opportunity to help them."

Lechtman made his first trip to Mexico in 1990 while in medical school at UC San Diego. He then rejoined the volunteer medical mission in 1998 and has visited Mexico every other year to perform the surgeries.

The trips are paid for through community donations. The doctors also pitch in for travel and air costs, he said.

"This kind of operation is the reason why I got into plastic surgery," he said. "It's an amazing feeling to make this kind of difference in a patient's life. I feel very fortunate to help."

Q: Why doesn't my belly get flat again after kids? I exercise, eat right and nothing seems to work.

A: Many women who have had children are surprised that their tummies are no longer flat regardless of how thin they become and how much they work out. This is because the abdominal muscles spread apart as the baby grows and often never go back together. The thinner tissue between the muscles is called a rectus diastasis, and this problem is sometimes accompanied by a hernia around the belly button. If the diastasis is very mild, abdominal strengthening may restore it, but if it is wider some women may opt for a surgical repair called a tummy tuck. The hernia can be repaired at the same time.

Q: Is there a way to avoid a large scar across the breast and preserve the nipple when having breast reconstruction after cancer surgery?

A: Many women are advised that they need to have their breasts removed because of cancer, precancer or a genetic predisposition for cancer. Some of these women may be candidates for a newer technique of skin and nipple preservation and single-stage reconstruction, without requiring the usual expanders or nipple reconstruction. The results are cosmetically superior, the post-operative pain is reduced and the recovery time shorter. Women should ask their surgeons if they are candidates for the procedure.

Q: If either I or someone in my family lands in the E.R. because of a non-life-threatening laceration on the face, at what point do I ask for a plastic surgeon?

A: Most emergency room physicians have extensive training and experience in dealing with lacerations. Often, people will ask for a plastic surgeon on call when the emergency room physician is perfectly capable of handling the situation, and may in fact have more experience than the surgeon on call. As a rule of thumb, lacerations involving the eyelids, lip margins, ears and nostrils can all be indications to call a plastic surgeon because they involve complex cartilage or muscle repairs. It is important to feel confident in the ability of your physician at all times, so if the emergency room physician is too busy or does not appear to be confident in his or her ability to treat the injury, it is appropriate to ask them to call a specialist.

Demi Moore covers herself in blood-sucking leeches to keep her skin looking fresh.

The actress -- who, at 45, is 15 years older than husband Ashton Kutcher -- is a huge fan of a detox treatment which involves the unpleasant creatures being placed on her body.

"I was in Austria doing a cleanse and part of the treatment was leech therapy," she told David Letterman.

"These aren't just swamp leeches though -- we are talking about highly trained medical leeches. We're talking high-level bloodsuckers."

Presley victimized

Priscilla Presley has confirmed she was operated on by an unlicensed cosmetic surgeon.

Presley -- ex-wife of Elvis Presley -- was injected with industrial-grade silicone used to lubricate automobile parts in 2003.

Dr. Daniel Serrano, who eventually was jailed for his illegal surgery techniques, performed the procedure on the Naked Gun actress.

Presley's representative said: "Priscilla Presley was one of many documented victims of Dr. Serrano. Ms. Presley dealt with this matter years ago and everything is well."

Tisdale says no to surgery

High School Musical star Ashley Tisdale has ruled out having more plastic surgery in the future.

The 22-year-old actress -- who had a nose job last November to correct a deviated septum and smooth out two bumps stemming from a past fracture --dismissed reports of further procedures, saying she is not planning to go under the knife again.

She told People magazine: "People are saying I had another nose job and I did not. That's ridiculous. I was away in New Zealand filming a movie."

Boxer Banned for Breast Implants

A female boxer has been banned from the ring – and it’s not because of her gender.

The former model says it’s because of her breast implants, London’s Daily Mail reported.

Sarah Blewden, 25, of Poole, Dorset in England, told the newspaper that boxing officials will no longer allow her to fight because they fear repeated blows to the chests would ruin her false breasts and “damage her breast tissue.”

Blewden began boxing two years ago as a way to keep in shape, but decided she had a real talent for it, so she applied to the Amateur Boxing Association.

When the Association found out she had the implant surgery in 2003, officials denied her request to fight.

The Association’s medical expert told Blewden she was at risk of distortion, and the breast tissue’s blood cells could be damaged.

Blewden appealed, arguing she would wear a breast protector, but was denied.

“They are gel implants and not liquid, so they won’t burst,” she said. “And if I suffer capsular contracture and need to pay for corrective surgery, then that is my decision.”

Italy moves to ban breast implants for teens

Teenage girls in Italy may soon be prohibited from having breast implants except in special circumstances.

A representative from Italy's health ministry recently explained to reporters that the legislation is meant to protect young women who may not be physically ready to accomodate breast implants, because of the risks associated with the mammary gland being not fully developed.

Bloomberg reports that 14 percent of 16- and 17-year-old Italian women said they would undergo breast augmentation surgery, and 30 percent reported feeling unsatisfied with their bodies.

Code for cosmetic surgeons rejected

A DRAFT code of conduct proposed by cosmetic surgeons has been rejected by the competition watchdog on the grounds it fails to provide consumers with sufficient protection.

The draft determination was handed down yesterday by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission as the consumer advocate group Choice was preparing to release its investigation into cosmetic surgery practices, which found what it described as "appalling examples of unprofessional conduct" in the industry.

Breast augmentation, liposuction and Botox were requested by three women engaged by Choice to consult 30 cosmetic surgery clinics across NSW and Queensland.

The investigation found that many of the clinics failed to inform the women of all the risks of surgery, the standard of proof of practitioners' qualifications was patchy and that some providers engaged in coercive behaviour to persuade the women to undergo surgery.

The woman seeking breast augmentation was told by one practitioner that the proposed surgery was necessary before offering her a price discount if she agreed to have before and after photographs published on the internet. At another clinic she was told she would increase her chances of finding a partner if she went ahead with the procedure and at three clinics she was given brochures offering loans to fund the surgery, which is not covered by Medicare or most private health insurers.

The majority of clinics approved liposuction - which is potentially life-threatening - and even attempted to "upsell" additional cosmetic surgery.

Choice's Christopher Zinn said people considering invasive cosmetic treatments needed to be aware that the difference between a cosmetic surgeon and a plastic surgeon could be up to eight years specialist training, and the largely unregulated industry was clearly in need of stronger legislation.

But the Australasian College of Cosmetic Surgery has dismissed Choice's findings as biased, with its president, Dr Daniel Fleming, saying no proof was provided that any of the clinics visited in the survey were run by members of his college. In its written response to submissions to the ACCC, the college accused the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons of making spurious and undermining claims as part of an ongoing turf war.

The ACCC's chairman, Graeme Samuel, said disclosure requirements over practitioners' qualifications and experience were still insufficient and the code lacked a clear transparent complaints handling process. There were also concerns over the industry's use of testimonials, he said.

Call to target rogues in nip 'n' tuck trade

CONSUMER group Choice is warning people shopping around for cosmetic surgery to check doctors' qualifications and experience after a woman it sent undercover was told she stood a better chance of finding a partner if her breasts were enlarged.

On three occasions the woman, one of three secret shoppers sent by Choice to evaluate cosmetic surgery practices, was given unsolicited brochures offering loans to finance the breast procedure, which is not covered under Medicare.

At one of the 12 clinics the woman visited to discuss a possible breast enlargement, she was shown a sales consultant's breasts as an example of the doctor's work; at others she was told she needed the procedure. She was even offered a discount if she agreed to pose for "before and after" photographs to be posted on the internet.

Choice magazine says in today's edition that the survey turned up these and other "appalling examples of unprofessional conduct", and calls for both consumer caution and a regulatory crackdown.

"Telling someone that they 'needed' (a breast augmentation), or that it would improve their chance of getting a boyfriend -- that's the sort of thing you would expect to see on a comedy show, not in a doctor's surgery," Choice spokesman Christopher Zinn said.

"We want to see better regulation and outcomes for patients. Until then, our best advice is to make sure of the qualifications and experience of any cosmetic surgeon you are considering, and to educate yourself as to the risks of any procedures."

Sent by Choice, the women made 38 visits to 30 cosmetic surgery clinics in Sydney and Brisbane, with each woman enquiring about either breast augmentation, fat-removing liposuction or wrinkle-reducing Botox treatment.

The content of the consultations was later scrutinised by experts from the Australian Society of Plastic Surgeons, who are all members of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons.

The surgeons rated the advice given about breast augmentation as "particularly bad" on the grounds that the mystery shopper was not fully briefed on the risks of side effects such as bleeding, infection, leakage or scarring.

While advice given about liposuction was rated as generally sound, the experts said Choice's "patient" did not fit the normal criteria and should have been advised to have a tummy tuck instead. Australasian College of Cosmetic Surgery president Daniel Fleming said the women's treatment amounted to "unacceptable practice" that was not consistent with its code. "We agree that there should be greater regulation of cosmetic surgery, and that's why we have applied to the Australian Medical Council for recognition, so every doctor working in cosmetic surgery will be able to have their qualifications assessed."

Animal surgeon takes on tough cases

Michael Pavletic has removed a butcher knife from a dog's stomach and tumors from tiny mice. He's performed plastic surgery on injured hawks.

But he draws the line at giving canines body piercings or fat cats liposuction. "That's just not what I do," said the longtime head of surgery at Boston's Angell Animal Medical Center.

The 58-year-old surgeon is known as a pioneer in reconstructive animal surgery and is so skilled at saving severely sick and injured animals he is sought out by worried pet owners from around the world. Pavletic has cared for thousands of animals, including a dog that swallowed an engagement ring right before the wedding, a cat needing a face reattached and a gorilla that required reconstructive surgery on a finger.

He's removed bullets from puppies, performed dental work on wolves and even tended to snakes with throat problems.

"I've been doing surgery for 30 years and there are very few things I haven't seen," Pavletic said just before going into surgery to remove stones from a cat's bladder.

In the past, animals with very serious injuries may have simply been euthanized to avoid lifelong pain and because surgical techniques on some injuries had yet to be developed. But advancements in medicine coupled with pets becoming more a part of families have increased the demand for serious animal surgeries.

"If it wasn't for him, my cat wouldn't be alive," said Kristin Gagnon, of Hanson.

Four years ago, Gagnon's Siamese kitten, Max, burned his palate to the bone after chewing an electrical cord. Pavletic reconstructed Max's palate by taking a graft from inside the cat's lip. "What a fantastic job he did," Gagnon said. "He's the only surgeon who could have done this."

For Pavletic, his love for animals started with sick birds and a terrier mutt named Tiger.

As a 6-year-old in Illinois, Pavletic tried to save injured wild birds by giving them water, food and a little attention. It rarely worked. And he was inseparable from his grandparents' terrier until the dog was killed by a neighbor's car.

But he began his journey into animal surgery after finishing veterinary school at the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana in 1974.

As an intern at Angell, Pavletic came across a cat named John Glenn that had a tumor on his face. At the time, veterinarians couldn't remove such tumors from animals while also closing the wound using conventional methods. Pavletic turned to an older human reconstructive surgery textbook that suggested a simple skin flap might do the trick. He took what was a routine technique in human surgery and tailored the procedure for a cat. It worked.

"My interest in surgery grew from there," he said.

Pavletic held teaching positions at Louisiana State University and Tufts University, and over the years developed more than 40 surgical techniques. He also authored a textbook, "Atlas of Small Animal Reconstructive Surgery," that is about to go into its third edition.

He returned to Angell in 1988 as head of surgery. That's when the fun started and his reputation grew as a healer of the strangest afflictions. The hospital began seeing oddball cases.

Once there was a dog with severe stomach pains. Pavletic's team found that the dog had swallowed a pair of red panties. They didn't belong to the dog's female owner.

"I don't know what happened to that marriage," said Pavletic.

Another time a family brought in their recently deceased goldfish and asked the team to perform an MRI to determine why it died. The cause: old age.

There was the case of the Labrador retriever who suddenly stopped urinating midway. After various tests, Pavletic discovered that the dog had a pellet stuck in its penis. The bullet had somehow moved down from its bladder after the dog was shot by an unknown assailant. Pavletic surgically removed it.

And while the injuries Pavletic sees may seem a bit weird, so are requests by some pet owners who confuse animal reconstructive surgery with superficial cosmetic plastic surgery. Over the years, Pavletic has fielded inquiries about dogs getting diamond studs in ears and cats getting liposuction.

"I tell them no," he said.

Nick Trout, an Angell surgeon and author of "Tell Me Where It Hurts: A Day of Humor, Healing and Hope in My Life as an Animal Surgeon," said Pavletic has been a "great mentor" to many aspiring animal surgeons, Trout included, and has always been accessible to veterinary students.

"We see a lot of people who come here specifically to hang out with him and learn from him," Trout said.

Pavletic said laughter is key to any animal surgeon's health, especially when you come across cases of animals that have been purposely injured by humans.

"You have to keep a sense of humor in this business," he said. "If you don't, you'll either leave it or go insane."

Dying Lady Spends Fortune On Surgery To Look Like Demi Moore

When someone has a terminal illness he has a different perspective on life. A dying person realizes that family and friends are more important than material possessions and worldly fame.

A dear friend of mine was always very fastidious about her appearance, but after she was diagnosed with terminal cancer she stopped buying designer clothes and she rarely applied any makeup.

But a woman in the UK with an inoperable brain tumor seems to be more concerned with the temporal than the eternal:

"A woman with an inoperable brain tumour is spending £40,000 on plastic surgery - so she can die looking like movie star Demi Moore.

Lisa Connell, 29, will use the money her mum Angela had saved up for Lisa's wedding to pay for her new look.

Despite being a stunning brunette, Lisa has never been happy with her appearance and is convinced the surgery will make her look as beautiful as Demi, who is no stranger to cosmetic surgery herself." Kelly Jenkins/Mirror.Co.UK

I don't want to be too harsh on Connell, maybe her brain tumor is affecting her mind. But why does she want to die looking like a bimbo celebrity?

If I had a terminal illness I wouldn't spend a small fortune on plastic surgery to look like Brad Pitt. When my friends and family view my remains and pay their last respects, I want them to see the real me and not a frightful caricature of Brad Pitt.

Looking like Demi Moore may make her last few weeks or months on Earth happy, but if she donated the money to a homeless shelter or to cancer research she could touch hundreds of lives.

I hope that Connell has a change of heart, in spite of the cancer ravishing her body she is still a remarkably attractive woman. I'm sure that her loved ones love her just as she is, and that's the way they want to remember her.

Mickey Rourke picked the "wrong guy"

Oscar nominee Mickey Rourke has expressed dissatisfaction with the corrective surgery done on his nose. The 56-year old star of 'The Wrestler' said that he has had five operations to fix the damage done to his face during his career as a boxer, and he thinks he may have gone to the "wrong guy".

Mickey Rourke admits he went to the "wrong guy" for plastic surgery. The 'Wrestler actor - who started boxing professionally in 1991 after his Hollywood career collapsed - claims most of the facial cosmetic procedures he underwent were to correct injuries sustained from the sport.

He said: "Most of it was to mend the mess of my face because of the boxing, but I went to the wrong guy to put my face back together."

he 56-year-old star suffered a catalogue of injuries while in the ring, but admits the cuts and bruises were nothing compared to one little-known side effect of the sport. He said: "I had my nose broken twice. I had five operations on my nose and one on a smashed cheekbone.

"I had to have cartilage taken from my ear to rebuild my nose and a couple of operations to scrape out the cartilage because the scar tissue wasn't healing properly. That was one of the most painful operations, but the worst was haemorrhoids."

Mickey eventually gave up boxing after he was advised to stop due to neurological problems. The actor, who was castigated from Hollywood due to his erratic behaviour, has also revealed his big screen comeback could have come earlier.

He turned down a role in 'Pulp Fiction' because he was convinced the work would come thick and fast again as it did in his 80s heyday.

Mickey admitted to Britain's Daily Mail newspaper: "I was out of control and did not think the party was going to end. I could stay in any hotel, buy anything I wanted - I once bought six Cadillacs for cash and then gave them all away - and take out all my entourage to dinner. "My mansion in Beverly Hills was like something from 'Halloween III' - Elvis on acid. The neighbours were moving in and out almost monthly."

Discount Plastic Surgery Abroad is Still Not a Good Idea

Thinking of coming home with a more permanent souvenir from your next vacation? It may be even more of a temptation in this economic climate, but the case of Tameka Raymond -- who was all smiles in the Sao Paulo airport yesterday -- is a valuable reminder that not all beauty bargains are created equal.

Usher's wife, who gave birth two months ago, headed to Brazil for liposuction a few weeks ago. Some consider the South American country the "plastic surgery capital of the world" for the amount its residents go under the knife, but Raymond had a heart attack while entering anesthesia and never ended up having the procedure done. Not a common occurrence, but she had to be placed in an induced coma and later moved to another hospital -- probably a better one than her doc had picked out.

Being wary of getting major surgery abroad isn't just a matter of xenophobia: Hospitals in common plastic-surgery destinations like Mexico and India can be excellent, with doctors who have received as much training (or more) as those doing the same procedures in the U.S.

But besides the communication barrier, scary enough when a patient is describing the desired effects of a procedure, the real problem is what happens when things go wrong. Usher can afford to drop everything and manage his wife's care, but most patients aren't that lucky. And leaving with a botched job or worse could be the unkindest cut.

Summer is right around the corner and so is the dreaded bikini. You may be getting into shape or just deciding what you are going to do to rid yourself of unwanted hair. Whatever the case, there are various methods and products available on the market to help with your bikini line, underarms, legs, and anywhere else where hair might be inhibiting your summer fun.

Razors have been my only means for shaving my legs, but years ago, I was getting cuts frequently with my cheap, disposable razors. One day, I decided to use my boyfriends Gillette Mach3 Turbo and I haven’t been back since. With a lubricating strip and enhanced micro fins, this three-blade razor promises a close, comfortable shave without nicks and is safe to use anywhere.

For smoother results, I recommend products by Nair. Nair promises better results that last days longer than shaving and instead of cutting the hair like razors, Nair removes hair from below the surface for a softer touch. I only usually use Nair for my bikini line so “bikini cream” is just right producing a stubble-free area that doesn’t grow back for about three days. Nair’s bikini cream is available at Wal-mart for about $4 and also comes in an easier glide-on version. If you can’t stand the smell of original Nair products, look for the new lotions that come in fresh scents like cucumber melon and cocoa butter.

What about wax? If you’re brave enough to try at-home wax, try Bliss’s Poetic Cosmetic Waxing Kit. I found that this kit is actually organic, containing oils and infused with aromatherapy. Bliss’s kit includes the wax, large and small spatulas, cleanser, lotion, and a cute little mug. Available at Sephora for $40.

When I get sick of maintaining my bikini line, I go for the Brazilian bikini wax. What it is: very thorough waxing that removes every last bit of hair except a thin landing strip. Yes, it is painful, but the results are amazing and can last up to 4 weeks. Available at Spa Sydell for $65 plus tip. If the Brazilian wax isn’t your cup of tea, try a regular bikini wax, which can be just as painful, but produces the same results, for about $35 at any spa.

If you’re looking for a more extreme result for hair removal that actually lasts, look into laser hair removal. Laser hair removal uses a pulsating laser light to remove unwanted hair pretty much anywhere including the upper lip, bikini line, back, legs, and underarms. Although laser hair removal may require more than one treatment to get rid of all of the hair, the procedure produces long-term and even permanent results. Averaging about $388 per treatment, laser hair removal can be performed by a certified dermatologists or dermatologic surgeon.

Any way you chose to remove your unwanted hair, make sure you use the right products to soothe your skin and prevent bumps, burn, and especially ingrown hairs. Try Tend Skin, a product available from Sephora for about $25. Useful for both men and women, Tend Skin is useful for any cosmetic problem related to hair removal.
C.O. Bigelow also offers a light after-shave lotion infused with eucalyptus oil and antioxidant grape seed oil that soothes skin from irritation. This product is fragrance-free and dermatologist tested for people with sensitive skin and can be found for $24 at Bath and Body Works.

Whichever way you chose to remove unwanted hair, make sure it is the right technique for you, especially if you chose laser hair removal. If anything, make sure to stay attentive to your skin to prevent serious razor burn, bumps, nicks, or ingrown hairs. Doing this will keep your newly smooth skin healthy.

Tummy Tucks for Men?

Women aren’t the only ones who care about their bodies. Though men are less open about it they, too, want to look and feel their best. Most men develop loose skin after a significant weight loss or gastric bypass surgery. Aging, too, can cause the skin to lose its elasticity, and result in sagging skin.

Tummy tuck surgery, formally known as abdominoplasty, can be performed as a full, partial or extended abdominoplasty. The closer you are to your ideal weight, the better results you can expect. A cosmetic surgeon who is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery should perform your abdominoplasty.

A full tummy tuck involves incisions from the pubic area up to each hip, and vertically to, and around the belly button. The skin flaps are separated from the muscle, and then the muscle connective tissue is sutured to bring it closer together, flattening and tightening the muscles. Liposuction may be done at this point if there is excess fat. The skin flaps are then pulled snugly to fit the abdomen, trimmed to fit around the navel and to remove excess skin, and sutured. Lastly, drains are placed to reduce fluid buildup, and will remain in place for a few weeks, until swelling goes down and healing is nearly complete. Surgery can take up to five hours, and is done under general anesthesia.

Partial tummy tuck is similar to its full counterpart, but involves only the abdominal area below the level of the navel. The incision above the pubic bone is shorter, not extending all the way to the hip, and there is no need for the vertical incision, as the skin above the navel will not be displaced. The procedure is similar–liposuction may be done if there is excessive fat, and the lower abdominal muscles tightened by suturing. The skin is pulled down and trimmed off, then sutured closed. Drains are needed to reduce fluid buildup, which remain in place until swelling begins to resolve. Surgery takes about two hours, and is done, usually, under general anesthesia. ASPS has animated both procedures to give you a better understanding.

An extended tummy tuck reaches beyond the abdomen to the sides, above the hip, to remove those precious love handles. The incision extends beyond the hip, and an additional procedure, liposuction, can be done to remove excess fat. Aside from including an area that extends to the sides of the abdomen, the procedure is not much different from a full-abdominoplasty.

First impressions: Forest Mere must be the best Champneys resort. A little harder to get to as the sat nav diverts you off on a slightly mud-beaten track at the side of a golf course; but when you arrive you can see why TV stars such as Barbara Windsor are fans. As you approach the mansion house you are lured past woodlands and a luxurious lake and brought directly up to the front of house.

Inside, the décor make references to old and new, and the spa and relaxation / sport areas – which houses such amenities as a swimming pool, steam room, Thalasso pool, spa shop and more – are hard to miss. Staff are warm and friendly and the rooms grand but demure. The spa itself is easy and accessible to all guests (day or overnight stay) and dependant on the packages you choose you can spend from half an hour to a whole day being pampered.

Treatment: I chose the Aqua detox scrub as my New Years resolution was to look after my skin more. I was entrusted with a very sweet therapist who delicately buffed my body all over with a brush and then applied a layer of Champneys aqua therapy scrub, rubbing in the salts to remove any dead skin cells and smoothen out the skins surface. I was then asked to shower off the remaining salts. When I arrived back my therapist applied firm and tone oil to my skin, massaging it in so my circulation would improve and then aid in firming and toning the skin.

Pros: Left my skin feeling detoxified, healthy and clear; a relaxing booking for a Valentine’s treat for a loved one – even if they are not into detoxing.

Cons: At this economic time, if you can flash the cash then do so; if not it’s definitely worth the save.

Curtailing chapped skin

Winter doesn't necessarily have to mean CHAPPED-SKIN SEASON. There are several easy and no-cost things you can do to keep your skin moisturized and happy.

What makes skin dry and flaky? The drying effect of central heating, which tends to zap the moisture out of our skin, is one cause. Try placing bowls of water around the house, and add a few drops of a favorite essential oil. I'm fond of lemon and orange. The added moisture from the evaporating water will help, and the fragrance is a nice addition.

To keep your hands from feeling dry and rough, always wear gloves when working around the house, and avoid putting your hands in water, especially hot water, as much as possible. Remember to pat your hands dry when they do get wet, and then apply a good hand cream.

Before heading outside in the cold weather, be sure to use a moisturizer with sunscreen on your face, neck and hands if they will be exposed. Wear a scarf if there's a biting wind. Care for your lips by applying a protective lip balm, and reapply often.

Alicia Douvall: Addicted to cosmetic surgery

Pumped so full of silicone that, if chucked into the nearby swimming pool, she might bob to the surface, Alicia Douvall purses her trouty lips, takes a deep breath, and begins explaining why she's just checked into an exclusive Malibu rehab clinic. The pneumatic glamour model, a famous purveyor of "kiss-and-tell" stories, is suffering from a potentially-deadly addiction. It has ravaged her body, alienated friends and family, and cost every penny of the fortune she accumulated telling red-tops about the peccadilloes of former boyfriends such as Mickey Rourke, Calum Best and Mick Hucknall. "Imagine playing Russian roulette with your life," she says. "That's what I'm doing. It's out of control, and has cost me more than £1m. Before I decided to come to Malibu, I'd accepted that I was going to carry on with it until I was either bankrupt or dead."

Douvall isn't dependent on cocaine, alcohol, painkillers, or any of the other substances that traditionally lead to a celebrity's downfall. Instead, she suffers an unlikely obsession: she is addicted to cosmetic surgery. "I've had so many operations that I can't feel my stomach, my left breast, or anything under my right arm," says Douvall, who first went under the knife as a teenager. Now aged 29, she has clocked up more cosmetic procedures than she can count, saying only that the exact figure is more than a hundred.

"I've had 15 boob jobs. I've changed my eyes and nose, had facelifts. My philosophy is 'if it can be changed, it will be'. It's got to the stage where doctors in Britain refuse to treat me any more, so I've been flying to the US for surgery and lying about my medical history."

Douvall's addiction is related to a psychiatric problem called body dysmorphic disorder (BDD), which she was diagnosed with several years ago. It is a condition on the obsessive compulsive disorder spectrum which causes victims to become preoccupied with their physical appearance, fretting over small or non-existent defects.

A cynic might say that in the old days BDD was known as vanity. But actually, it's the reverse: sufferers believe they are hideous, rather than attractive. They avoid mirrors, and spend hours each day worrying about being ugly. In extreme cases, they become deeply depressed, and reclusive. The suicide rate for victims in the US is 45 times the national average.

Douvall is a textbook case. Though outwardly attractive (she is, after all, a professional model) and intelligent, her adult life has been consumed by concerns that she is unspeakably hideous. She takes anti-depressants and sleeping pills, and has repeatedly submitted herself to the cosmetic surgeon's knife. "I'm on a quest for change," she says. "Every two weeks, I'll go see another doctor. Often I'll walk in, not even knowing what I want doing, and say something like 'what do you think might be wrong?' or 'what do you think of my eyes?' I keep hoping I might wake up one day feeling happy with myself."

Douvall recently discovered that submitting herself to the medical version of cut-and-pasting isn't the only way to deal with BDD. She was speaking at the exclusive Passages Addiction Centre in Malibu, near Los Angeles, where she spent four weeks being treated and filmed for a reality TV show, called Rehab. This sometimes compelling, if slightly tasteless series, which begins this week on the satellite channel Living, follows seven "fallen celebrities" who have agreed to undergo intensive courses of therapy in an attempt to find a potential cure for addictions that have ruined both their lives and careers.

It will show former Bay City Roller Les McKeown, Happy Mondays backing singer Rowetta, and Robin Le Mesurier, the musician son of actor John and Hattie Jacques, attempting to cure alcoholism. Model Cassie Sumner is treated for bulimia, Victoria Sellers attempts to kick drugs, and Karate Kid star Sean Kanan tries to wean himself off prescription painkillers. Tacky though it sounds, it also provides a priceless insight into the rehab industry. Passages, on a hillside overlooking the Pacific ocean, is one of the world's most exclusive clinics. It resembles a boutique luxury hotel, and charges well-heeled clients, who have included the fashion designer Marc Jacobs, an eye-watering $78,000 a month for their pains.

Unlike almost every clinic, Passages does not treat patients with a version of the traditional "12-step programme". Instead, its founder, Chris Prentiss, has pioneered a regime that rejects the notion that alcoholism and drug addictions are incurable diseases, and instead views them as symptoms of deeper psychological problems. Prentiss, who founded the clinic after helping wean his son Pax off heroin and alcohol, believes that most addictions stem from a person's failure to come to terms with a traumatic past event. Through intensive therapy sessions, his team work to identify this event, before forcing patients to look at it in a positive light – trying to convince them that, as Voltaire said, everything is for the best in this best of all possible worlds.

"If someone has been abused as a child, or says 'I was raped when I was six', we help them reframe it, by showing them that it was actually a perfect event in their lives, because it made them who they are," says Prentiss. "We show them, for example, that wisdom and strength and information didn't come from their ho-hum days, it came from these power points."

Prentiss claims, perhaps in a bid to justify his exorbitant fees, to have an 85 per cent success rate at "curing" addiction. This is three times higher than rival clinics such as the Betty Ford Centre, but has been widely questioned. Some critics have dubbed him a snake-oil salesman. Yet Douvall's experience frames him in at least a moderately positive light. The model, who was born plain Sarah House, and had a comfortable upbringing in Sussex, was originally sceptical about her chances of being treated, and planned to celebrate her release from the clinic by having a "toe facelift" – an highly-complex operation to straighten her feet.

"You couldn't have got a bigger cynic than me," she says. "I didn't believe in counselling or rehab, or in a person being able to change." But after intensive therapy sessions at Passages, many of them filmed, Douvall reveals the cause of her BDD: she was abused as a child (details are not broadcast, apparently for legal reasons) and was also assaulted by an ex boyfriend, destroying her self confidence. She became a teenage mother – her daughter is now 13 – effectively cutting short her adolescence.

During the treatment, Douvall says she was reduced to tears three or four times a day by the the acupuncturists, hypnotherapists and assorted counsellors. After the cameras stopped rolling, she stayed at Passages for an additional fortnight to continue treatment. Today, though she doesn't claim to be "cured" of her cosmetic surgery addiction, Douvall's condition has at least improved. Shortly before leaving Passages, she cancelled her planned "toe facelift".

"It was one of the toughest things I ever had to do," she says. "They break you down to build you up, and keep chipping away until they find a crack. But they do it because it helps, and I now think everyone should go into rehab at least once in their lives. After all, who can say they're perfect?"
